July 2016 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
A bit late on this one, but I'm getting it out and it's the thought that counts. June is over and done, so now we're into the two month Blockbuster season. Goodbye indie films, goodbye dramas, hello action films and dumb humor comedies, for better or for worse. These are the films coming out this month I'm most interesting in seeing (keep in mind, I might not and probably will not see all of these).

July 8th

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
Does it look smart? Absolutely not. However, I've always held dumb humor movies to a guilty pleasure kind of degree. I like something that I can just go to the theatre, turn my brain off, and enjoy something no matter how stupid it may be.

July 13th

The Infiltrator
I know nothing about this movie aside from the fact that it's a thriller, and it's got Bryan Cranston in it. Other than that, I know nothing. I don't even know what the plot is, just that it's got one of my favorite actors working today, and it's a crime drama. For me, that's enough.

July 22nd

Star Trek Beyond
I personally have really enjoyed the last two Star Trek movies, and have been looking forward to this one for a while now. While I'll admit I'm not 100% sure about it, I'll still probably go see it because it looks entertaining enough. There's also the factor of it being one of Anton Yelchins last movies, so I'm definitely seeing it.

July 29th

Jason Bourne

Another Bourne movie? Personally, I thought the third film tied the series together with a pretty good ending, and continuing it isn't entirely necessary. However, with Paul Greengrass directing and Matt Damon starring, chances are this movie is going to be exactly what we want.

Cafe Society

Woody Allen seems to put out one movie every year, and they're usually either something like Blue Jasmine or Midnight in Paris where it's met with a continuous stream of praise, or something like both films released between Blue Jasmine and this one, which rank as "just okay". So at this point, there's really no telling what Cafe Society will be like.
