Lazy Film Critic reviews:
The Grand Budapest Hotel is the latest film from Wes Anderson, starring... sheesh, a bunch of people. You've got a ridiculously large ensemble cast, including Ralph Fiennes, Tilda Swinton, Saroise Ronan, Harvey Keitel, Jude Law, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Murray, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Edward Norton, & Owen Wilson. So in other words, this movie made 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon about ten times easier.
Wes Anderson is a director who's well known for two things. Dry comedy, & quirky characters. And both of these things are heavily prominent in this movie, a lot more so than with his most recent film Moonrise Kingdom. Where that film did a great job of placing the quirkiness into a world with a footing in reality, this film creates a unique and oddball world right off the bat. But, unlike The Life Aquatic where it was so absurd and kooky some people were put off by it, this movie does a good job of still keeping it relative, and working the deadpan humour into the world really well.
Much like all of Wes Andersons films, this is a great looking movie. Here he allows his creative art style to shine with every shot, every prop, & every costume. Fans of his films should be pleased with the art design and colour pallet of the film, because it really has an incredible amount of variety here.
The deadpan humour in the film, like I said before, shines with this film. This is one of the best dry comedy films to come out in a good long while, which shouldn't be that surprising considering it's one of the few dry comedies to come out within the last five years. But it's on a par with Moonrise Kingdom & Royal Tenenbaums as far as Wes Anderson films go.
Final Rating
The Grand Budepest Hotel is an inventive, creatively filmed, and downright funny movie. The actors are great in it, the style of the film shows Wes Anderson's nuttiness and downright genius as a filmmaker to it's fullest, and it's easily one of the best films I've seen this year so-far.
The Grand Budapest Hotel: 4.5/5
