Lazy Film Critic reviews....
Insurgent is the sequel to last years Divergent, with the plot still following Shaleine Woodley's Triss, as she struggles to live in a world divided into factions, while she's what people call "Divergent". Just keep in mind, when I say "factions", I mean a whole bunch of nerdy groups and a parkour team. The film is directed by Robert Schwentke, who's previous work includes RIPD and RED, so from there, you can probably guess what I thought of this movie.
Much like all of these YA Hunger Games rip-offs, Insurgent boasts a pretty impressive cast of talented actors, outside of the two leads. You've got Miles Teller (recently showed off a lot of acting skill in Whiplash), Naomi Watts, Kate Winslet, Octavia Spencer, Ray Stevenson, Daniel Dae Kim, and Maggie Q. However, unlike a lot of other films, these actors get very little time on-screen. Now, them not getting much screentime would be fine, if the main characters were at all interesting, which they're not. Shaliene Woodly is a good actress, and I hope she gets better roles than these, because her character in Insurgent is about as flat and one dimensional as you can get out of a YA movie, which is saying a lot. Shaliene Woodly is a good actress, and she's good in this movie, but her character is terrible.
The plot and dialogue are completely nonsensical, but even worse then that, they're just boring to watch on screen. The dialogue especially, the dialogue in this movie does this really weird thing where it feels irrelevant, but they're talking about the plot. That's how boring the dialogue in this movie is, there's a scene where characters are directly addressing the main story of the film, and it felt like they were talking about their opinions on Target or Walmart. The plot is terrible too, it's really convoluted and it doesn't make a lot of sense to see things play out, because there's no reason for anything. The film starts out, and suddenly there's this box. Never brought up at any one point in the first film, it's just there. Why? I honestly didn't care enough to pay attention 100%.
Now, you guys know me, I like to give credit where credit is due. And in that, the action scenes in this movie are pretty cool, they're entertaining enough to break you out of the stupid plot, and they keep your interest in the movie for a few seconds. But it's not real interest, it's like a jump scare. There's no depth to my interest, I'm just watching slightly more intently because there are guns going off. Even worse is that it never feels like there's a real segway into the sequences, they just kind of happen. There's one scene where two characters are talking about something (I don't remember what), and then it's an action scene. Now, if the film were written well, this would be cool. But, the film is written terribly, so it's anything but cool.
Final Rating
Insurgent isn't worth your time, or your money for that matter. It's badly written, the pacing is nonexistent, all the characters were about as dry as a dry bowl of rice in the sahara desert being eaten by Ashton Kutcher, which honestly sounds interesting in comparison to Insurgent. If you're into Divergent, maybe go see Insurgent. But it's not a good movie, and I still think that Kingsman is the best movie playing in theatres right now.
Insurgent: 2/5
Despite everything I just said, I've gotta give a quick shoutout to Cinemablographer.com for the screening, as well as me winning the screening passes in general.
