Bloodsucking Bastards movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews....
Bloodsucking Bastards is a vampire horror comedy from director Brian James O'Connell, and written by Ryan Mitts and (and I swear this is the actual listed name on IMDB) Dr. God. The film stars Fran Krans, Pedro Pascal, Joey Kern, Emma Fitzpatrick, Joel Murray, Justin Ware, and Marshall Givens. The film follows this kind of socially awkward guy, Evan, who's looking forward to a promotion at his job, only to find out that the job has been given to a newer, more charismatic guy. Things get even worst for Evan when he finds out his the new sales manager is also a vampire, which for obvious reasons, isn't the best situation to be in.
Now, Fran Kranz is an actor who has shown in the past that he's really good with characters like this. This is the first time I think I've seen him play the lead role, and I've gotta say, he does a pretty good job. His comedic timing was pretty spot on, and he has shown that he can do a kind of deadpan style of comedy really well. However, the acting highlight here is Joey Kern, who ultimately ends up being the most memorable character in the movie. I've never seen this guy play a role beyond a small character in one scene, and after seeing this movie, I want to see more of him. His comedic timing is perfect for every scene, his delivery is great, and he essentially turns this from just a regular comedy into a hilarious deadpan comedy.

Now, there aren't many reviews of this movie yet, but of the few that exist, almost all of them have made a comparison to Office Space at least once. Now, that may not seem right, with the whole vampire thing going on, but it's actually a really accurate comparison. This film is essentially Office Space, just with vampires. Those of you who've seen Office Space will know, that film does a really good job of creating a realistic office feeling, mainly with the dialogue, and the back and forth between the characters. And this movie has a lot of really well written, realistic, and hilarious dialogue between the characters.

Like I said, this movie features a lot of a lot of dry wit and almost deadpan at times. It has the realistic dialogue and the realistic office setting, but it's combined that with the premise of vampires also existing. In some comedies, this would lead to the comedy being isolated between the human characters, but what makes Bloodsucking Bastards unique is that a lot of the humor comes from the main characters trying to work in an office with vampires. Because the main characters are so normal, it makes all the vampire related scenes that much funnier, because it kind of comes out of nowhere. And (especially Joey Kern) some of the reactions to any vampire related thing as so non-chalant that it just cracks you up.

Final Rating
Bloodsucking Bastards was a hilarious horror comedy, one that I would easily watch again if given the chance. This is one of the first comedies in a good long time to make me laugh this much. If you liked Office Space, Shaun of the Dead, or both, I'd say definitely go check out Bloodsucking Bastards.

Bloodsucking Bastards: 4.5/5
