April 2017 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So March has been really empty thus far, Ghost in the Shell and Trainspotting 2 are the only releases left for the month. With the CUFF announcement now, I've decided to talk about the movies I'm looking forward to this month.

Aftermath - Limited Release
Ever since 2015's Maggie delivered Arnold Schwarzeneggers most compelling performance as a dramatic actor, I've been keen to see what's next for him in that line of acting. Then, this movie came out of nowhere and much like Maggie it looks like this movie will once again give me an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie that will make me cry like a baby.

The Fate of the Furious

Let's just get real here, this series is about as nonsensical as you can possibly get. What started as a simple kind of dumb racing series made exclusively for loud frat boys has turned into one of the most completely absurd action movie franchises in modern day. Even with the last film involving two separate sequences of cars defying the laws of gravity and physics, this series still manages to pull nonsense out of nowhere. I can't wait.

Sand Castle - April 2017 Highlight
If there's one thing I really love that's increasingly rare, it's anti-war movies, and Sand Castle looks to be exactly the sort of thing I go for in those terms. Harrowing, an engaging protagonist, a great cast, Sand Castle looks like something real special, and I can't wait.

Buster's Mal Heart
Rami Malek is an actor to pay attention to, and Buster's Mal Heart is a film to watch out for. I have no idea what it's about from the trailers, but it looks really interesting, and the visual style from what I've seen is phenomenal. Count this as one of the most intriguing films of the month.

Free Fire - April 2017 Highlight
Free Fire looks like the kind of action dark-comedy I've always wanted to see, it's got everything I love in movies. Minimalist plot, a talented cast, British comedy in the vein of Snatch, sounds like exactly my kind of movie. Free Fire seems like a perfect blend of everything I want to see in a movie, so you can bet it's on the top of my list this month.

The Untamed
Every since last years The Witch I've been on the lookout for the latest in obscure dark horror, and I have a feeling this could be it. I haven't seen much of or about it, but I'm intrigued by the premise and the visual style.

My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea
This is another one I've been excited for the last few months. It has a great cast, an interesting minimalist visual style, and from the trailer it looks like it should be really funny. Honestly this is one I'm excited for for much simpler reasons, it just looks generally enjoyable and I go for that sort of thing a lot.

Berlin Syndrome
Indie horror is always a delight to see, especially an indie horror thriller that could be seen as touching on topical themes, and Berlin Syndrome seems to have struck that particular fancy with me. A Hitchcockian thriller with a great cast, count me in.

The Little Hours
This project I'll have to admit I know very little about, I'm mainly sold on the cast and the prospect of a dark comedy period piece much like O'Brother Where Art Thou. This and a few other movies are ones I know little about but I'm intrigued about anyway
