Lazy Film Critic reviews...
Interstellar is the long awaited film from Christopher Nolan, who (incase you don't know who that is) also made Inception, Memento, The Dark Knight, and The Prestige. The film stars Matthew Mcconaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Casey Affleck, Topher Grace, & Wes Bently. The film follows a crew of astronauts sent into space to find a habitable planet for humans to live on, as Earth has been pretty much totally messed up by global warming and famine.
Now, this definetly not an easy film to review, at least not without giving away any spoilers. Let's jsut start with the basics. Matthew Mcconaughey is absolutely fantastic in this movie, he gives a performance which is easily one of the best in recent years, certainly worthy of an oscar nomination. The rest of the cast are also pretty great here, Jessica Chastain (as usual) gives an excellent performance, Anne Hathaway also gives an excellent performance, both of them probably deserve oscar nods as well. Even Wes Bently and Topher Grace did a good job, and I didn't really expect much from either of them, but they were both pretty good.
As is to be expected with Nolan, this film is certainly a thought provoking and mind melding film, rife with subtle plot twists you didn't really expect. And Nolan (again, as expected) does a fantastic job of executing every aspect of this film, from the science behind ti, to the way the film looked, to everything the film was saying, it was all just brilliant. A lot of people have said that the film rips off elements of 2001: A Space Odyssey, to which I completely disagree. The film pays homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey, and does a damn good job of doing it. I'd even make the bold statement of saying this film is comparable to A Space Odyssey, even knowing that I might be accused of herecy or blasphemy for saying that.
Matthew Mcconaughey and Anne Hathaway in Interstellar |
The score for Interstellar is absolutely beautiful, one of Hans Zimmers best since Inception. The songs in the film are riveting and only aid in the films overall sense of intrigue. The cinematography here is also fantastic, but also really different from Nolans set visual style, or most visual styles in general. A large chunk of the film looks and feels like it was shot by a really good photography blog, like it had an oddly Instagram-ish look to it, but in a good way. A really good way in fact, it helped give the film a unique sense of realism to it, which was good seeing as how the film may seem unrealistic to some people.
Final Rating
What else can I say about Interstellar? It's beautifully scored, beautifully shot, brilliantly directed, and features excellent performances. Mcconaughey, Hathaway, & Chastain should all be nominated for oscars for this movie, and this movie is totally worth seeing for everyone, no matter what. If you have the time, go see Interstellar. I guarantee it'll be worth it.
