Best & Worst of Matthew Mcconaughey

Article by Gabe Zia
Okay, we've been waiting for Interstellar for a while now. It's almost been exactly a year since that teaser hit the internet, and since then my anticipation for this movie has only gone up. For one, it's directed by Christopher Nolan, who is one of the best directors out there right now. The film also stars an actor who, for the longest time seemed like one of the worst, and is now widely considered one of the best, and that guy is Matthew Mcconaughey.

Despite what many will say about Matthew Mcconaugheys career pre-Dallas Buyers Club, he's had quite a few other good films. Whenever he's not being a smarmy romantic comedy character, he's usually doing a pretty decent dramatic role. A Time to Kill, The Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, Dazed and Confused, and Reign of Fire. However, for my best, I'm going with a fairly recent film, Mud.

Mud is a really great film, featuring what I believe to be Mcconaugheys best performance. Why? Because to me, this is one of the only non-typecast roles he's done, this and Reign of Fire. He usually plays cocky male leads in a rom com, or existential monologing leads in dramas. This however sees him as basically a homeless person, who isn't especially smart or skilled, but it still a good guy and can see the difference between right and wrong. Mud was my 2nd favorite film of 2013, and for many good reasons, one of which was Matthew Mcconaugheys outstanding performance.

If you're in most ways aware of Matthew Mcconaugheys track record, you should know he hasn't exactly had an outstanding resume up until now. With such films as How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Wedding Planner, Fools Gold, Ghost of Girlfriends Past, Sahara, Two for the Money, Surfer Dude, EDtv, or TipToes, he's had his fair share of bad films. My pick for worst is not Fools Gold, surprisingly enough, but instead I'm going with Failure to Launch.

This film is just awful. Yeah, three weeks in a row, I'm not holding back for worst, because this film stinks. Normally I'd say it's not the lead actors fault, but yeah, a lot of it has to do with how much of a cheeseball Matthew Mcconaughey is in these type of movies. Not only that, but his character is extremely unlikable and extremely unrelatable. The chemistry between Mcconaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker is basically nonexistent, not just because her character is also unlikable and unrelatable, but also because the films script is garbage. Be it the dialogue or the story itself, it's all garbage. You'd get more chemistry, likability, and relatability from a rom-com about mannequin and a rock.
