August 2016 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So we're halfway through the summer blockbuster movie season. After a fairly empty month of July, a pretty packed August is a welcome sight. Some of the most highly anticipated films of the year are coming out this month, and a few little known films that more people should know about. So, here are some of those movies.

August 5th

Suicide Squad
I have never - not once in my 19 years of living - been this strongly conflicted about a movie leading up to its release. Suicide Squad could very well be one of the more entertaining movies of the year - and if the marketing is any indication it'll be at least entertaining - or it could be another film just as bad if not worse than Batman v Superman. So, I suppose I'll have to wait and see what it's like.

August 12th

Sausage Party
You know me, animation is always my jam. And while I'm perfectly fine to see animated films a whole family could enjoy, it's nice to see that animation studios are still willing to get behind an adult-oriented animated film. Who knows, this could very well open the door for talented animators and talented animation writers to expand their horizons. That alone seems worth the price of entry.

Anthropoid
This is another one of those movies I know absolutely nothing about, beyond the premise. I know it's set in world war 2, I know it has spies, and I like the cast. Honestly, that's enough to catch my interest. I'm easy to please, so sign me up!

August 19th

Kubo and the Two Strings - August 2016 Highlight
As I just said, animation is my jam. And Kubo and the Two Strings looks right up my alley. It's the same studio that made Coraline and Paranorman - both of which are fantastic films, and the stop-motion animation in this movie looks outstanding. I absolutely cannot wait for Kubo to come out, so you know this has got to be my highlight of the month.

War Dogs
Does it look like the smartest comedy ever made? No, but Miles Teller and Jonah Hill are both generally funny and talented actors, enough so to make me think it'll be above average. And hell, even the average comedy is fairly funny, so I'll be sure to give this a shot.

Imperium
Harry Potter is a neo-nazi? Not exactly. Imperium is a dark but (in my opinion) important look into American neo-nazi groups, through the eyes of an undercover FBI agent played by Daniel Radcliffe. Needless to say, this will probably be one of the most jarring and intense movies of the Summer.

August 26th

Don't Breathe
Where Mike Flanagans "Hush" (one of my favorite films of the year) played on the senses by making the protagonist deaf, Don't Breathe appears to be going at a similar approach. A group of young criminals break into a blind guys house, and as expected, the blind guy starts fighting back. This movie is being directed by the guy who made the pleasantly surprising Evil Dead remake, so I have high hopes for this one as well.

Southside with You
Listen, regardless of your political alignment, Michelle and Barack Obama are goddamn adorable. So a movie about them, having nothing to do with Barack being the president sounds awesome. I'm a sucker for these kinds of movies, so bring it on!
