Enemy movie review

I'm not going to lie to you guys, even after the credits had ended, I was still sitting in the theatre silently reflecting on what I'd just seen.

Lazy Film Critic Reviews:

Enemy is a psychological thriller, brought to us by the director of Prisoners. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, & Sarah Gadon. The plot of the film is that Adam (played by Gyllenhaal), after watching a film a friend recommended to him, finds out that one of the actors in the film looks and sounds exactly like him. This, as it would for anyone, leads to him wanting answers as to what's going on, which in turn leads to a very... Interesting film.

The acting in the film is top notch. Jake Gyllenhaal brings his A game to the film. He plays both Adam & Anthony so distinctly so that you know they're different people, which is very hard to do. Whenever someone tries to do a movie with this idea behind it, it kinda falters, but he plays the role very well. Among the supporting cast is Sarah Gadon, an actress who I hope gets noticed for this movie, because she also does a very fine job of conveying the role of someone caught in between this chaotic situation.

Sarah Gadon & Jake Gyllenhaal
If there's anything I can completely say about this film is that it's going to be amongst Donnie Darko & Inception in the category of movies people really debate over. This film is incredibly David Lynch-ish, which would lead to a lot of metaphors & ideas behind it. Which means lots of things to discuss, lots of ideas people are going to have as to what this film means and what it represents.

The direction of the movie is incredibly engaging. As I said, very similar to David Lynch. All the shots are well done, but a lot of the times the imagery is shockingly strange. And the music fits the scenery and visuals very well, adding to that tone you would only get from a certain type of director.

However, is Enemy for everyone? No! Absolutely not. In fact, there are very few situations where I'd say Enemy is the best possible movie. Why do I say this? Well, because it freaked me out. The imagery, the music, and the editing all form this experience which really caused me to start questioning reality. That kind of experience is a little too intense for most people.

Final Rating
Enemy is, by cinematic standards, a masterful film. It has a genius metaphor that's conveyed in one of the smartest ways I have seen in a good long time. Which is why it kinda sucks for me to say I wouldn't recommend this movie to everyone. Because, like with David Lynch films, the elements of the film would probably be just way too much for some people to handle. However, if you're a fan of David Lynch films, Donnie Darko, or any film like that, Enemy is certainly worth seeing.

Enemy: 4.7/5
