Noah movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews:
Noah is the latest film from Darren Aronosfky, who also did Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain, Black Swan, and some other films like that. Noah stars Russel Crowe as the title character, and also co-stars Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Ray Winstone, & Logan Lerman. And it's based on the story of Noahs ark from the most discussed book of all time.

Now, as a bible based film, I went into this with caution. Why? Because most bible movies that come out are very preachy (shocker). But, to my surprise, it kept the religious aspects on a reasonable level and focused more on being it's own film. However, it did this by taking artistic license and changing a few things up. Granted, this is probably why a lot of christian groups have given this film a lot of hate, from what I've heard it isn't strictly accurate. But the book is hundreds of years old, creative license can be used after a certain amount of time.

The actors in this movie did a great job with each of their roles in my opinion. Russell Crowe's giving a strong reminder that he is a really good actor, and not just a punchline for Les Miserables jokes. Jennifer Connelly was great in it as a kind of moral compass character. Ray Winstone is really good in the movie, as the sorta kinda villain character. Hell, even Anthony Hopkins is great in the movie for the ten minutes he's in it.
Fans of Darren Aronofsky know he's not a normal director. His films are usually very dark, or very atmospheric. And this film does deliver on those things, but not to the extent Aronofsky fans are probably used to. With films like Pi you get really strange imagery, atmospheric cinematography, & and a lot of thought provoking scenes. And this movie did kinda get me thinking, but not as much as I thought it would.

Final Rating
Noah is an epic fantasy film, filled with great visuals and cool sets and some fantastic performances. Certain religious people may feel like this goes against the original story, and Darren Aronofsky fans may be disappointed by it too a certain extent. But, as a film, it does a good job at carrying the story & the characters in a surreal film.

Noah: 3.9/5
