Lazy Film Critic reviews:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the latest of the marvel films, and one of the last "phase two" movies (the other phase two movies being Iron Man 3 & Thor 2). This one stars Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, & Samuel L. Jackson.
One of the many things I feel obligated to talk about in this review is that this is not a typical Marvel film. What I mean by that is that this film is a lot more dramatic than most of the others, it does a good job of creating a great tone and feel. The characters are shown to be more than action props, but instead as real characters. This is probably due in large part to a strong script. This film doesn't have the ridiculous plot twists of Iron Man 3, or the corny humour of Thor 2. Whenever the plot takes an unexpected turn, it fits very well into the plot. The comedy in the film is a great blend, it's not situational, but instead all in the dialogue. That's not really something that I've seen in Marvel since The Avengers.
At it's core, I wouldn't strictly call this a superhero film. In fact, the majority of the film focuses more on a big conspiracy and a lot of espionage. It surprisingly works really well into the world of the film. However, that's not to say that there's no action in the film, there's a lot of action in this movie. And not just a good amount of action, but really great action as well. This film doesn't fall to the two major cliches of action movies (shaky cam & slow-motion), and it creates for really intense and fast paced action sequences. Not to mention, amazingly choreographed fight scenes. Fight scenes that have seriously not felt this real since The Raid.
Something that I don't think a lot of people mention when talking about Marvel films is the acting. However, with Winter Soldier I think the actors did a really great job. Especially the two leads, Chris Evans & Scarlett Johansson. Both of them were very believable in their roles, and did a great job as the characters. And they also had some of the best chemistry in any of the Marvel films. They had great back and forth conversations, and their humour bounced off each other for some great dialogue.
Final Rating
To be honest, I enjoyed this film even more than I enjoyed The Avengers. It's absolutely one of the best Marvel films ever made. It has great characters, really good performances, stellar writing, and absolutely amazing action sequences. If you're a fan of Marvel by any stretch of the imagination, I'd highly recommend you go see this film. It's simply one of the best superhero movies ever made, and one of the best films this year.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier: 5/5

And yes, Robert Redford was fantastic in this movie. |
