How to Train your Dragon 2 movie review

Lazy Film Critic reviews...
How to Train Your Dragon 2 is the sequel to the 2010 hit film How to Train your Dragon. The film follows the same characters as the first film, as well as some new characters. It stars Jay Baruchel, Djimon Honsou, Gerard Butler, Cate Blanchett, and America Ferrerra. The film follows the main character of the first film (Hiccup), and takes place five years after the first film.
When it was announced that a sequel for How to Train Your Dragon was on its way, I was skeptical. I was a huge fan of the first film, I thought it was a fantastic movie, but I was unsure of how a sequel would be able to be nearly as good as the first one. But, to my surprise, this isn't just as good as the first one, it's even better!
First off, the animation in this film looks incredible. Every object, every character, every backdrop is detailed to look as real as possible, but still retaining that stylized look from the first film. That kind of blend between realistic animation and stylized animation can cause a film to delve into obscure and weird looking animation. But, this film manages to perfect the animation, and I can honestly say this is the best animation in an animated movie I have seen, well, ever.
However, there's always more to an animated film than technical stuff. The first How to Train Your Dragon did a great job of mixing a good sense of humor with a good dramamtic story, and I feel that this one also does that very well. The comedy here is funny and enjoyable, but the story here is absolutely fantastic. This film has some touching moments, and even some really sad moments. The films dramatic and mature moments are probably the best parts of the film, and they're all done so well, and handled very maturely. A lot of family films cop out with mature moments, but here it's great with them.
The characters are also great, with the film focusing on what I found the be the first films only gripe- that being not enough development in supporting characters. And while the comic releif characters still have similar roles in the first film, this movie knows when to play its cards with its characters. And the voice work is outstanding, Cate Blanchett and Djimon Honsou both add to an already great voice cast. Jay Baruchel and Gerard Butler are also just as great as they were in the first film, both adding on to the dynamic of their characters and their voice acting talent.

Final Rating
How to Train your Dragon 2 is a great film. The animation is fantastic, the voice work is great, the characters are great, and the story is well written and overall great. The film's a bit short, at only 105 minutes, but that really doesn't stop this from being an amazing movie by any stretch of the imagination.

How to Train your Dragon 2: 5/5

  1. Good review Gabe. It was a lovely to look at movie, but what made it even better was by how emotional it could get without being afraid of over-stepping their boundaries. And thankfully, they never did.
