Only Lovers Left Alive movie review

Lazy Film Critic reviews....
Only Lovers Left Alive is a film by Jim Jarmusch, the director of films like Ghost Dog, Dead Man, or Broken Flowers. It stars Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Anton Yelchin, Mia Wasikowowska, John Hurt, and Jeffrey Wright. The film is about this grunge rock musician, played by Tom Hiddleston, who is actually a reclusive vampire. And no, by a vampire, I don't mean the vegan, overly emotional, sparkly vampire, I mean a legittimate, gothic style vampire.
Tom Hiddleston & Tilda Swinton in Only Lovers Left Alive
Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton are both incredible in their roles. Tom Hiddleston plays the most memorable character in the film, being witty and sarcastic, and likeable. Tilda Swinton is perfectly cast in the role, she's already really skinny and pale to begin with, and she does a great job with her role. Anton Yelchin was also great, and he wasn't in the film a whole lot, but he was in the film enough. The characters in the film have great chemistry, and individually they're interesting and memorable characters.

The film is also outstanding directed, having themes that resonate with both the gothic vampire aspect of the punk rock aspect. The film is enriched with both themes, blending them together seamlessly to create an incredibly real and unique movie experience. What's even more impressive is that a concept like this is usually something you would only ever find in a book, but this film isn't based on a book, or anything. It's an original script and idea, and I think that's awesome.
This film looks great, all the shots are beautifully executed, and the way it's filmed looks amazing. The visuals of the film are great, due to the way it's filmed and the way it's edited. A lot of the scenes are entrancing, due to both the way they're filmed and the soundtrack of the film. The soundtrack is also fantastic, being both dark and playing on the themes of the film.

This film is also really creative, with the director doing interesting and original things with vampires. A central focus of the film involves pollution, and how human blood in the 21st century is pretty much undrinkable due to stuff in the air. Usually a movie bringing in a global warming aspect feels forced, but here it's subtle and clever. There's also a lot of scenes where the director uses stuff that exists in vampire lore to make the characters realistic. The way he uses vampire mythology to integrate the film with the real world was very cool and made it feel like this is what it would look like if vampires existed in the real world.

Final Rating
Only Lovers Left Alive is a fantastic film, one of the best I've seen all year. It's a limited release film, so it could be difficult to find showtimes, but if it's playing, I'd highly recommend you go check it out. I loved every minute of this film, from its great characters, to its amazing direction, to the creativity of the writing, this is just an amazing film.
Only Lovers Left Alive: 4.7/5
