Snowpiercer movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews...
Snowpiercer is a Sci-fi dystopian thriller film, starring Chris Evans, Song Kang-Ho, Ko Ah-Seong Tilda Swinton, John Hurt, Jamie Bell, and Octavia Spencer. The film is about an immensely long train called Snowpiercer, which holds all that's left of humanity after an attempt to reverse global warming set the earth in a horrific ice age. The film is directed by Bong Joon-Ho, the director of films such as The Host.
Still of Chris Evans
The story of the film is surprisingly refreshing, considering how many dystopian future films are coming out these days. At its most basic, it's the story revolves around Snowpeircer, and how the rich and wealthy occupy the front, and the poor occupy the tail of the train. The rich get to live a life of luxury, with various luxuries such as hair salons, and even raves. Now, where it gets interesting is how the film handles the "revolution" of sorts. Usually, with films like Elysium and Hunger Games, the main character is usually forced into the revolution, and eventually becomes a part of the movement. But what this film does, and it does it so well, is that it shows that everyone in the tail is seriously committed to this goal of freedom, especially the main character, Curtis.
Still of Jamie Bell
The acting in Snowpiercer is also superb, from the entire cast. Jamie Bell, John Hurt and Octavia Spencer play more supporting roles, but they still do a great job. Tilda Swinton plays a posh, rich character from the rich side of the train, and she does a good job with the role. Song Kang-Ho and Ko Ah-Seong play these two tech experts who are a little weird, and they both do a pretty good job. However, the stand out performance here is definitely Chris Evans. To say that this is his best performance yet doesn't quite do it justice. Evans gives a emotionally gripping and powerful performance, one that I hope people recognize him for. There's one scene in particular, near the end, which has stuck with me hours after seeing the film.
Still of Song Kang-Ho
This film handles its social-political commentary in a very intelligent and very smart way. Instead of cramming comparisons to modern society, like most films with an evil government, this film handles them very maturely, and allows the audience to notice the subtle and profound statements this film is making. The style of the film itself is also pretty cool, similar to the Fallout series, with some of the gritty dark violent stuff juxtaposing with some 50's style propaganda stuff. It was a pretty cool movie to watch. However, some people may not like how the film slows down at some parts. Personally I didn't mind because the story was interesting enough to keep it going, but I can see why some people would mind.

Final Rating
Snowpiercer is a really refreshing film, with a great mixture of both a sophisticated social commentary, with a pretty entertaining action-thriller. Chris Evans gives a fantastic performance, one that stood out the most of all the actors in the film (even among John Hurt & Tilda Swinton). My only real issue with the film was its ending, which I'd say wasn't as satisfying as I hoped it would be. Other than that, it's an engaging and thought provoking film, one that will probably stick with me for a while.

Snowpiercer: 4.7/5
