December 2014 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So, December is right around the corner, so it's time to take a look at some of the films coming out this month. My reviews of The Imitation Game and Foxcatcher will be up the day that I see them, as well as Dear White People, The Guest, and a few other films I've wanted to see for a while now but have not shown up here.

December 5th

Wild
Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée
Stars Reese Witherspoon
Wild, I honestly know nothing about. I know it's about Reese Witherspoon walking for a long time, and there's also some pretty deep undertones in the movie, which sounds kind of interesting. However, after The Imitiation Game and Foxcatcher decided not the show anywhere here last month, I've kind of lost hope that any film I want to see will come out here on time ever.

December 12th

Exodus: Gods and Kings
Directed by Ridley Scott
Stars Christian Bale & Joel Edgerton
I have not seen The 10 Commandments. There. Think of that what you will. However, I've seen Prince of Egypt, so I'm sort of knowledgeable about this, even though I doubt there'll be musical numbers in this version of the story.

Inherent Vice
Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson
Stars Joaquin Phoenix, Jena Malone, Benicio Del Toro, & Josh Brolin
Once again, this is another film I'm looking forward to, it looks like a bit of a return to formula for PTA, with a similar style to his older stuff. Not to mention, this film seems oddly like a Coen film, which is never a bad thing.

December 19th

The Hobbit pt. 3: The Battle of Five Armies
Directed by Peter Jackson
Stars Martin Freeman, Ian Mckellen, Benedict Cumberbatch, & Luke Evans
At this point in time, I'm starting to feel like I'm the only one who loved The Desolation of Smaug, and then stuck with it. I knew people who loved it upon release, and now either don't like it or think it's just alright. However, I loved it, and I can't wait to see this installment.

December 26th

The Interview
Directed by Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen, & Peter Frizalone
Stars Seth Rogen, James Franco, Lizzy Caplan, & Randall Park
I think this film looks simply hilarious. I've loved Seth Rogen and James Franco in the past, I think they have great chemistry, and I personally can't wait for this movie to come out.

Unbroken
Directed by Angelina Jolie
Stars Jack O'Connell, Garrett Hedlund, Luke Treadway, & Domhnall Gleeson
I've found that the story of Louis Zamperini is interesting to me, because the guy is basically the coolest person ever. He was an Olympic champion, a pilot in WWII, survived on the ocean for 47 days, and then survived a POW camp, and lived up to a few months ago. It's like if a whole bunch of cool genres, rolled up into one film, and it really happened. That is awesome.

Best of November 2014: Interstellar
With Interstellar, Christopher Nolan delivers what I believe to be a masterpeice of filmmaking. This film has all the great qualities we've come to expect from Nolan and then some. Interstellar features beautiful cinematography, absolutely breathtaking visuals, a fantastic score by Hans Zimmer, and a captivating story. The performances by Matthew Mcconaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Jessica Chastain are downright Oscar worthy, and some of the best performances in their entire careers. Interstellar is without a shadow of a doubt my favorite movie of the year so-far, and I think everyone should go see this movie, regardless of how long it may be. Trust me, it's worth it the whole time.
