Lazy Film Critic reviews....
The Imitation Game is the story of Alan Turing, a mathematician in World War II who invented the first legit computer in order to crack enigma, and essentially started the chain of events that defeated the Nazis in world war II. The film was made by relatively unknown director Morten Tyldum. The film stars the always awesome Benedict Cumberbatch as Alan Turing, and co-stars Keira Knightley, Mark Strong, Charles Dance, Matthew Goode, and Rory Kinnear.
Now, I've been waiting to see this film for a long, long time, for a couple of reasons. One, I'm a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch, and two, I think this is an intriguing story that I'm glad has been told on screen, because I had no idea about any of this. And personally, I'm glad I saw the film, because this is an interesting story, about a fairly interesting guy. The film takes advantage of how interesting that story is, and explores every aspect that might seem insignificant to its fullest, which I think is pretty neat.
Like I said, I'm a fan of Benedict Cumberbatch. I think the guy has had a few really great characters over the past few years, mainly being Sherlock on the show Sherlock, and Khan in Star Trek into Darkness. However, I have no doubt in my mind that his performance in The Imitation Game is the single best in his entire career, and absolutely has to be nominated for an oscar. He's not exactly the same character he's played in other works, having more of an aspergers-like personality than in, say Sherlock, where he just seemed like a narcissist. As for the other cast, they all do pretty well, but are totally overshadowed by Cumberbatchs awesome performance.
I went into the fact that the story of this film is pretty interesting. This has a lot to do with the fact that, unlike a lot of other biopics, this film has a few angles, and a few things going on. Basically, Alan Turing didn't exactly have the easiest life, despite having a major hand in winning the war, and the film goes at this from the harshest and most realistic angles possible. As you can guess, this leads to the film being a major downer. For me, I think that's a plus for the film itself, however there's no escaping the fact that the film isn't exactly cheerful.
Final Rating
The Imitation Game is a well made, well acted, and interesting movie with an interesting story. The film has a lot of stuff going on, which may lead to the film being slow, however it makes up for that by having interesting moments and thought provoking elements. I doubt this film will be nominated for a ton of awards beyond Benedict Cumberbatch for best actor, however it's still a good movie and worth your time.
