The Hobbit The Battle of the Five Armies movie review

 Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews....
The Hobbit - The Battle of The Five Armies is the third and final film in The Hobbit trilogy, based on the book (which was, for some reason, split into three parts). The film is directed by Peter Jackson, who also made the Lord of the Rings movies. The film stars an absolutely huge cast, with Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian Mckellen, Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Stephen Fry, Sylvester McCoy, and Billy Connelly.
Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins
First off, all the acting in this film is really good. Starting off, there's Martin Freeman, who I've always thought did a really good job as Bilbo, and was essentially perfectly cast for the role. However, he doesn't bring anything new to this entry that he did with the first two, however that's not to say he isn't good. Ian Mckellen is also really great in the film, as is to be expected with someone like Ian Mckellen. The performances in the film are overall pretty solid, although I do have some gripes with the presence of the characters.
Ian Mckellen as Gandalf
As I said, this film was not needed to be cut into 3 different parts, and this film shows that to an incredible degree. Mainly, there's the fact that - from what I've heard - this film consists of essentially a chapter from the books. So when the poster says "The Defining Chapter" as its tagline, it literally means the defining chapter. And that leads to two problems I had with this movie, which add up to more than just small gripes. One, a lot of the characters get little screentime. For example, Smaug, easily the best character in the 2nd Hobbit film, probably in the whole trilogy, barely in this film. The second issue is a lot of scenes that were tacked on or extended longer than they needed to be.
I still retain Smaug is one of, if not the best dragon in years.
One thing I will say for The Battle of the Five Armies is that it isn't even a little bit lacking in the action department. Like the title suggests, this film follows - for the most part - a battle of five armies, which lasts for almost the entire movie. If you're a lord of the rings fan - like me - and you have that one friend who constantly bashes the entire series for being too slow or having too much walking (everyone either has that friend or is that friend), show them this movie. It's easily the most consistently entertaining Lord of the Rings movie, whether or not that's good or bad is really up to your judgement.

Final Rating
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies is, despite my gripes with the writing, a pretty solid movie. It's got great performances, it's got great action, and it has a lot of memorable scenes. If your a Lord of the Rings fan, you probably already have tickets for this movie next weekend. I'd say The Hobbit was certainly worth my time, but I still retain it should've been two parts (or hell, maybe even one movie like how it was one book).

The Hobbit - The Battle of the Five Armies: 4/5
