So, 2014 is coming to an end, and 2015 is in like, 2 days. So, before I talk about my favorite movies of 2014, of which there are a lot to mention, I'm going to talk about the films I want to see in 2015. Now, as many of you may know, 2015 is kind of a packed year, with a lot of films coming out, many for both the blockbuster crowd, and also the independent art house crowd, both of which appeal to me. So, here it is, the top 20 films coming out next year, and why I want to see them.
20. Blackhat
Director: Michael Mann
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Viola Davis
I'm usually into movies with hacking, and I happen to like most of Michael Manns crime movies, Collateral and Heat in particular. While I don't expect Blackhat to be exactly Collateral or Heat, I still have high hopes. The premise of this film follows Chris Hemsworth as a convicted computer hacker who is given a last chance to have freedom, by helping the government find a cyber terrorist.
19. Crimson Peak
Director: Guillermo Del Toro
Stars: Tom Hiddleston & Jessica Chastain
Really, I'll watch anything with Tom Hiddleston in it. The guy is straight up one of the coolest people working in the film industry right now. His next role could be an infomercial for the shamwow or something, and I'd still pay money to see it. (Maybe that's a bit of a stretch, but you get the idea).
18. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 2
Director: Francis Lawrence
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Philip Seymour Hoffman
Catching Fire was still pretty awesome, even after the disappointing Mockingjay part 1. However, Deathly Hallows part 1 was also a bit of a dud, but Deathly Hallows part 2 is arguably one of the best in the Harry Potter series. Here's hoping Mockingjay part 2 will be able to say the same thing.
17. Chappie
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Cast: Shalto Copley, Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver
Elysium may have been kind of a let-down, but I still enjoyed it, and am glad Neill Blomkamp is still doing movies. What's interesting about this film is that, while Elysium was mainly action, this film seems to be going back to the roots of what made District 9 so great. The film follows a robot invented by this genius programmer guy, which has the ability to think like a human. Incredibly original? Not really. However, I'll see it regardless because I will see anything Neill Blomkamp puts out.
16. Inferno
Director: Ron Howard
Cast: Tom Hanks
As one of the few who actually has enjoyed the previous two Dan Brown films, I'm definitely looking forward to this one. Like most films based on commonly beloved books, I have not read any of the books. And everyone who I've talked to about the films says that the only reason that I like the movies is because I haven't read the books, which may be true, but I'm still not going to stop liking the movies.
15. The Night Comes for Us
Director: Timo Tjahjanto
Cast: Julie Estelle, Yayan Ruhian
Still of Yayan Ruhain in The Raid: Redemption |
14. Untitled Christmas Eve Special
Director: Jonathan Levine
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anthony Mackie, Lizzy Caplan
50/50 was awesome, and I think it's awesome that Levine, Rogen, and Gordon-Levitt are teaming up again. The films plot hasn't been announced, however knowing 50/50, it'll probably be a nice blend of bother a funny and relatable comedy, and at the same time, a sombre and dramatic film which will hit everyone on an emotional level at some point.
13. Big Game
Director: Jalmari Helander
Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Ray Stevenson
Samuel L. Jackson in Big Game |
12. Midnight Special
Director: Jeff Nichols
Cast: Joel Edgerton, Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst
Mud and Take Shelter have both convinced me that Jeff Nichols is a director to watch out for, even if the plot of this film seems a little strange, I'm still intrigued simply by the fact that Jeff Nichols is directing it, and I'm pretty much convinced this guy is the next Steven Spielberg.
11. The Walk
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt

10. Jurassic World
Director: Colin Trevorrow
Cast: Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer, Jake Johnson

9. Triple Nine
Director: John Hillcoat
Cast: Aaron Paul, Norman Reedus, Anthony Mackie, Chiwitel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Teresa Palmer
Not sure if this is a set photo or if these two are just bros or something. |
8. Mission Impossible 5
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Cast: Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton
Ghost Protocol was flat out amazing, I loved it, and I couldn't wait for more. It's a little concerning that it's not the same director as Ghost Protocol, but it's the writer who did the script for Edge of Tomorrow, so that's just as good (if not better). I have no idea what the film is about, but I'm glad there is a fifth one in general.
7. Bond 24
Director: Sam Mendes
Cast: Daniel Craig, Christoph Waltz, Dave Bautista, Andrew Scott
Speaking of awesome spy movies, Skyfall was also pretty sweet, and unlike MI5, this has the same director as the last awesome movie in the series. Not to mention, it also has a pretty great cast, with Christoph Waltz as a villain, Dave Bautista who is without a doubt the best wrestler turned actor since The Rock, and Andrew Scott who killed it as Moriarty. All in all, I can't wait for this.
6. Sicario
Director: Dennis Villenvue
Cast: Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio Del Toro
Dennis Villenvue is hands down one of the most promising directors working right now. With Prisoners being one of the most disturbing films I have ever seen in my life, and Enemy being the closest thing to a David Lynch movie just short of an actual David Lynch movie, he's another one of those directors who I'll see anything they make.
5. The Hateful Eight
Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Zoe Bell
Ever since Django Unchained, I've been waiting for another Tarantino movie, and here it is. Granted, almost a year away, but it's something. Much like Django Unchained, this film is also a western, which has only served to make me even more excited to see this movie.
4. Kingsman: The Secret Service
Director: Matthew Vaughn
Cast: Taron Edgerton, Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Caine

3. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson

2. Max Mad Fury Road
Director: George Miller
Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult
I am a huge Mad Max fan, I didn't even need to see the trailer for this movie to make my top 5. However, I did see the trailer, and it helps this movie that it might just be the greatest trailer ever made.
1. Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Director: J.J. Abrams
Cast: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Max Von Sydow, Adam Driver, Lupita N'Yongo, Domnall Gleeson, Harrison Ford, Mark Hammil, Carrie Fisher, Andy Serkis
Here's the thing with The Force Awakens. It's a new Star Wars film, so there is no angle I could go about this that would put it anywhere other than #1. Even if the fact that it's a new Star Wars movie wasn't exciting enough, there's also the fact that it's being helmed by J.J. Abrams, and it has an amazing cast. Mainly, the guy I'm looking forward to is John Boyega, because that guy is awesome. I've only seen him in one movie, but I know he's one of the coolest actors working today.
