Lazy Film Critic reviews....
Furious 7 is the latest, and from what I can tell possibly the final entry into the Fast & the Furious series. It stars Vin Deisel, Michell Rodriguez, Tyerse Gibson, Ludacris, Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Djimon Honsou, and Paul Walker in his last role. This film follows the Fast & Furious crew being attacked by an ex-special forces agent, Deckard Shaw, seeking revenge for Vin Diesel nearly killing Owen Shaw at the end of the last film.
Okay, normally I start out my reviews here with either acting, or the writing, or something cinematic about the film. Let me just get this out of the way right now, this is not one of those times. The real goal of this movie is to fill its two hour run-time with as much absurd, over the top action as humanly possible. From the start of this movie, it's constant action, one scene after the other. And what this movie does, and does it strangely well, is it keeps raising the bar on nonsensical action. Every scene seems like the most ridiculous moment, and that it couldn't get any more ridiculous, and then almost immediately after that it manages to top itself.
Now, the Fast & Furious series has never been exactly anything to get too excited about in terms of the acting. However, this is where Furious 7 managed to deliver something a bit refreshing, and a bit above the usual. All the returning cast members are about as good as they usually are, but it's the newcoming actors or more recent actors who bring something new to this series. Dwayne Johnson was a lot of fun in the movie, as you could probably expect. Kurt Russell seemed to have a lot of fun with this role, he never seemed too serious, and he went with it. Jason Statham doesn't usually play a villain, but he does a really good job here, bringing all of the intensity he'd usually bring to a main character role, and putting it in a villain.
Now, a movie like this is far from perfect. Unless it's a rare situation like Kingsman, balancing insane over the top action and good clever writing isn't an easy task. And unfortunately, where Furious 7 is entertaining as hell, the writing here isn't all that great. The dialogue is about as flat as you'd usually expect, and the story is the usual action movie story, it's about as straightforward as straightforward can get. However, the movie makes up for it by keeping everything dialogue and story related brief. Every non-action scene lasts about a few minutes, and then you'll get a good 20 minute action scene.
Final Rating
Furious 7 isn't by any means an intelligent film, but it's in every way a entertaining over the top action film. It keeps raising the absurdity to what seems to be the maximum, but then keeps going. In other words, it's a physics teachers worst nightmare. This movie is two hours of guns, explosions, fast cars, cheesy one liners, and awesome fight scenes. If you're a fan of the series, or even just the recent films, I'd say check it out. If you're looking for something a bit more intelligent, this may not be the movie for you.
