Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
In the Heart of the Sea
In the Heart of the Sea is the latest film from the critically acclaimed director Ron Howard, who previously directed A Beautiful Mind, Rush, Apollo 13, stuff of that sort. The film follows the story of a Whaling crew who encountered a giant sperm whale which, due to the fact that whales probably don't like the prospect of whaling, goes completely nuts on the ship. The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Tom Holland, Ben Whishaw, and Brendan Gleeson.
In the Heart of the Sea is one of those movies I've always found very difficult to review, because I'm not 100% sure what I thought about it. On the one hand, there is stuff to enjoy in the movie. First off, the actors in this movie are all pretty good. Nothing Oscar worthy, but good enough to carry the film. Chris Hemsworth and Tom Holland were both the standouts of the movie, mainly because it was their characters who got the most screentime.
The acting isn't the only decent thing about this movie, which should be a given seeing as how it has directing legend Ron Howard at the helm. His directing methods show in both the structure of the film, as well as the cinematography. Speaking of the cinematography, it's probably the movies best feature, and the thing that I remembered most when the movie was over. Any scene showing the water or the boat on the water is absolutely stunning, and does an amazing job of bringing out both the rich color and the grand scale of the ocean.
However, other than that, this movie doesn't have a whole lot going for it. One of the most common phrases used in reviews for this movie is "boring", which is a term I hate to use, but there's really no alternative. The film takes about an hour to get going, but even then it's still a very slow movie, and not a lot happens in it. That's to say, not a lot feels like it happens. If anything, the real issue that honestly broke this movie for me was that I never cared about these characters. I didn't know enough about them to get invested, they were too flat for me to care about their struggles, and because I didn't care about the characters, I ended up not caring about the movie.
Final Rating
I actually saw this movie way earlier in the month, and I think how late my review is really says a lot about the movie. Simply put, it's forgettable. Sure, the acting is good, and the cinematography is nice. However, the films writing is so dull, and the characters are too flat to be compelling that I completely forgot I saw this movie. And chances are, if you were to see it, you'd forget too.
