Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
Zootopia
So Disney Animation Studios is back after letting Pixar have total control over 2015, and they've returned with Zootopia, a film about a world where there aren't any humans, and all animals live in a peaceful and modern civilization. It's a fairly simple plot, but with Disney it's rarely about the plot, but about its execution, and Zootopia is a perfect example of that.
3D CGI animation is becoming more and more impressive with every new movie, and Zootopia may be one of the most impressive 3D animated movies I've ever seen. The detail in this world is breathtaking, and it absolutely pays of in what is Disneys best looking 3D movie yet. The style and the way the characters are designed isn't anything all that special, but the movie makes up for that with incredible detail.
However, the amazing animation isn't what makes Zootopia special. The majority of Disney movies have some underlying theme, usually they could boil down to the same thing, but this is the first time I've seen Disney tackle issues that are both relevant, important, but also probably difficult. This movie's main focus is racial prejudice and equality, which is not something I ever expected to see from a Disney movie about talking animals.
Another thing that made Zootopia a really great experience was the writing, while most Disney movies have a good sense of humor, rarely is it this clever. The dialogue in this movie is their best since Wreck-it-Ralph, and the pop culture references were unexpected but totally worked in the movie. The way the characters were written made them each feel real, which overall makes for a more engaging movie, which makes for a better experience.
Final Rating
Zootopia is a film for everyone, and I don't just say that in terms of age groups. If you're a social-political type like me, this is a great movie to promote discussion. This movie has a unique message, and yet one that's very important and relevant right now. Zootopia is one of Disneys most human movies, even though it doesn't have any humans in it. If you're looking for a good time, go check it out.
