May 2016 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So, Before I Wake didn't come out, for the third time now, so needless to say I'm disappointed. however, that doesn't stop May 2016 from looking pretty good, so let's take a look at the films come out this month!

May 6th

Captain America: Civil War
This is now the third superhero property this year where two Superheroes disagree on something and have to fight, the first was Daredevil and Punisher over what was essentially a death penalty argument, the second was Batman and Superman over... Whatever it was they were fighting over, and now the Avengers are split up and fighting over essentially the surveillance debate. After Batman v Superman, I've been waiting for a really good Superhero movie, because after that sorry excuse of a Superhero film I really need this to be good.

Money Monster
One of my favorite movies of the year so-far is a movie called Eye in the Sky, and it's up there because it wasn't a grand scale movie, it was an isolated film most of which taking place inside a governmental office, with people talking to each other, and it was genius. Money Monster looks similar, it's mostly set in one room with one intense situation, and I love movies like this, so I can't wait.

A Bigger Splash (limited)
This is another one of those very niche films with a limited target audience that I am very much a part of, just from the trailers alone I can tell I'm going to like this movie, it looks like a solid thriller and a solid movie overall with some great visuals.

Kill Command (UK release)
I remember I was on Youtube browsing through various trailers, and I came across this smaller sci-fi film that I thought would just be another dumb B-movie, but it's not. Kill Command looks fantastic, and I home it comes out in Canada eventually, I don't want this movie to be this years "Dope" and never shows in a single movie theatre in my City, and I have to wait to rent it sometime next year.

The Nice Guys
I love movies set during the 70s, and The Nice Guys - like a lot of the movies on this list - looks kinda like my jam! It looks funny, it looks entertaining, and Shane Black is great with movies like this.

X-Men: Apocalypse
I'm a bit skeptical about this movie. It looks like it could be entertaining, as long as it doesn't wallow in melodrama and gives Quicksilver the spotlight he deserves and didn't get in Days of Future Past. On the other hand, I can't help but worry that this will be the "The Last Stand" of this X-Men trilogy. To me, this series will never be better than First Class (although First Class did leave a pretty high standard), so all I can hope for is a decently entertaining film.

Best of April 2016: Hush
Deciding between Hush or The Lure has got to be one of the single most difficult choices I've had to make while writing this blog, as both Hush and The Lure are brilliant works of art that I know for a fact will make my top 10 of 2016. However, at the end of the day, I gotta pick one, so I'm going with Hush. This is a true masterpiece of horror, the way Mike Flanagan handles a cat & mouse suspense thriller is genius, and makes for one of the few truly scary horror films in recent years. This film doesn't have any jump-scares, the horror is all in it's pitch perfect execution. As a horror fan, I am so happy that a film like Hush can still come out and not be clustered with generic cliches. I would say that Hush is the best horror film we're going to see in 2016, and the only reason I won't say that is because Flanagan has two other horror films coming out this year. Hush is a horror masterpiece, and a filmmaking gem. If you have a Netflix account, I implore you to watch it as soon as possible.
