Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
Deepwater Horizon
So following 2014's Lone Survivor, dynamic duo Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg are at it again with Deepwater Horizon. The film follows the tragedy of the titular oil rig in which a series of missteps led to the whole thing going up in flames and the biggest oil spill in US history, and the film explores the events leading up to and following the explosion. Among Wahlberg is a very talented cast including John Malkovich, Kurt Russell, Gina Rodriguez, and Dylan O'Brian.
With a cast as talented as this one, yes of course the performances in this film are top notch. Mark Wahlberg is as good as ever, even if these kind of roles are becoming a bit typecast for him. Gina Rodriguez and Dylan O'Brien are both fantastic, some of the best I've seen from either of them. John Malkovich was really good, as good as you'd expect. The standout to me from the cast was Kurt Russell, as some may now he's one of my favorites of all-time, so to see him really deliver and own a role like this was fantastic, I'm all the more psyched for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 after seeing this.
Something that Peter Berg has shown a talent for with Lone Survivor and now this is that he's really good at setting up an event and getting the audience into it slowly and patiently but without boring them. The set-up for the big disaster took longer than I expected, the same thing happened with Lone Survivor, but I didn't personally see this as an issue as overall it made the disaster more believable and more emotional when it actually starts to happen.
Speaking of feeling, this movie is an intense experience one the actual disaster starts to happen. The movie takes its time with each horrific incident, and it allows the viewer to really get into the core of each scene, and it not only makes it real, it makes it terrifying. You remember the sinking scene in Titanic? Imagine if the entire movie was just that, that pure feeling of adrenaline, tread, and a genuine sense of danger, that's what Deepwater Horizon is.
Final Rating
I think the best way to describe this movie is that it's the best disaster movie in a long damn time. This film takes its time developing characters and educating the audience on why and how this actually happened, and then once the disaster starts going it doesn't feel like it ever stops. I highly recommend Deepwater Horizon, check it out if you get the chance.
