June 2017 Watchlist

 Article by Gabe Zia
I think it's fair to say that May was kind of supremely dead. But it's all good now, because June certainly isn't! This is without a doubt the most packed month of the year, there's a lot coming out and a lot of it is worth keeping an eye out for.

June 2nd

Wonder Woman - June 2017 Highlight
As of writing this the review embargo has just been lifted and the movie comes out in a couple of days, so this is obviously something I'm really looking forward to. This looks like a major turn in the right direction for the DCEU, fun, colorful, balanced, and with actual characters to attach to. And while Justice League is probably going to be a lot of the same we've seen from the franchise, hopefully WW marks a major change for the series.

It Comes at Night
This is one of the movies this month that I would say is best described for me as "mysterious but intriguing". I know little to nothing about this movie beyond I think it's post-apocalyptic, but even as far as that's concerned I'm not really sure. Still, it's certainly got my attention.

The Book of Henry
As far as movie trailers are concerned a trailer can accomplish its job in one of three ways, one is to show bits and pieces of action to entice people to see the movie, two is to be vague and give a general sense of the movie to arouse curiosity, and three is to throw in an unexpected curveball in the trailer so that people just have to see it. That last one is rare, but it's certainly the case for Colin Trevorrows "The Book of Henry". Don't believe me? Watch the trailer and see for yourself.

Resident Evil: Vendetta
Video game movies are rare as is, but even rarer is good video game movies, and the animated Res Evil movies (not to be mistaken for the live action Milla Jovovich series) have been stellar thus far. Even with those however, Vendetta looks pretty damn great, especially in terms of animation quality.

The Bad Batch
Amongst the movies this month The Bad Batch particularly stands out to me as looking weird. But weird enough to catch my interest, and I'm hoping it's not just being different for the sake of being different because it could be a lot of fun.

June 30th

Baby Driver
I'll be honest, I'm a little skeptical about Edgar Wrights newest movie. It sort of looks like Drive if Drive were more leaning towards being a comedy, right down to the story being about a getaway driver who lives up to his title and tries to get away from his life of crime but runs into complications with former employers. Still, if the SXSW rave reviews are any indication, it's one to look forward to.

Okja - June 2017 Highlight
Ever since 2014's Snowpiercer made my top 5 of that year (and has since moved up to being my #1 of that year), I've been eagerly waiting for Bong Joon-Ho's next directorial outing, so Okja is obviously something I'm very much looking forward to. Much like his other stuff, it looks weird, it looks dramatic, it looks stylistic, and it looks to be telling a serious story with a quirky execution, and a Netflix Original as well? I'm sold, I don't want to wait the whole month for this one.

The Beguiled
Like It Comes at Night, I know very little about this one beyond an intriguing and kind of vague trailer. My knowledge of this movie begins and ends with "Sofia Coppola period piece" and that's really all I need to be interested.
