Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
Genocidal Organ
So a few nights ago I saw an animated movie called Genocidal Organ, this year hasn't been especially great for fans of animation, the biggest animated movies of the year being the living meme that is Boss Baby and the almost universally despised Emoji Movie, so aside from A Silent Voice and Loving Vincent this is the only other animation highlight of the year for me.
As with any good animated movie the focal point and centre of attention is the animation. Due to its limited release the pictures I have at my disposal are limited but to say the very least the animation is downright breathtaking. It kind of sucks that foreign animation is the only market where two dimensional animation is still popular because I still maintain that it looks significantly better than most Disney 3D movies, and that said 3D movies like Frozen or Tangled would look a lot better with Disneys older animation style. The attention to detail, especially with background and landscapes is gorgeous to look at, and the colours compliment the detail beautifully. Unlike a lot of Japanese animation, the style is heavily focused on a photorealistic aesthetic, which was a really good choice given this films maturity both in terms of content and tone.
Genocidal Organ is one of those movies that reminds me that there's a massive divide in terms of approaches to animation between North America, where animation is often family friendly and live action content is more mature, and Asia, where I would honestly argue the reverse to be true for the most part. This films story deals heavily with genocide both as a concept and even delves into the psychology into why genocides happen. It's also an extremely political movie, and although it's politics are entirely fictional and based on a fictional series of events leading to its science fiction near-future world, there's plenty of real-world parallels to draw from, specifically when the film gets into the ideas of classism and racism as a factor in genocide. For a movie that seriously looked like a total meathead action movie this is right up there with Blade Runner 2049 as movies that had a lasting effect on me and left me thinking about their themes and how they apply to the real world for weeks after seeing them.
Final Rating
Usually when it comes to anime movies it's really hard to give them a general recommendation, they're often pretty niche and only established fans of the genre would be able to deal with the massive cultural divide. But Genocidal Organ doesn't have any of that, in fact if not for its style of animation I would be easily convinced this movie was a Hollywood production. So if anything I've said sounds interesting, give Genocidal Organ a watch.
