John Wick movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews....
John Wick is a new action movie starring Keanu Reeves as John Wick, a retired hitman who goes back into the business in order to avenge the death of his dog (already this movie is awesome). It's directed by two veteran stunt directors, who have worked on films like V for Vendetta, 300, The Matrix, Constantine, Serenity, and Live Free or Die Hard. Among Keanu Reeves, the film also stars Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palacki, Willem Dafoe, John Leguizamo, and Ian Mcshane.

I'm gonna get straight to the point here, this film is pretty awesome. The action in this film is incredibly well done, with great choreography and fast paced action sequences. A common complaint I've had this year with action films is trying to be something it's not. John Wick doesn't do that, and fully embraces itself as an action film, which is really impressive. It's also well shot too, none of the shaky camera or really fast editing a lot of modern action films use. Instead, there are a lot of sequences shown through long uninterrupted shots, which make for engaging and really entertaining scenes.

What's also great about John Wick is that it has a very unique and visually amazing style. During the downtime in this movie, it keeps your attention to the screen with fantastic shots and an awesome soundtrack, which both work together for a film which feels stylish, while still being entertaining. In some ways, this film reminded me a lot of Drive, just with more action and less stares.
Adrianne Palacki in John Wick
I'd say the best way to describe John Wick would be kind of how I described Edge of Tomorrow, which is that it feels like a video game brought to film. While in Edge of Tomorrow it felt like playing a video game, here it feels like the world of a video game, only it didn't feel as stupid as most movies would be with that description. The whole hitman underground of John Wick felt very much like a video game world where you have these locations and these systems by which pretty much everything runs. If that still sounds kind of dumb, trust me, this film does it well.

Final Rating
John Wick is a fantastic comeback for Keanu Reeves, it's got pretty much everything you could want in a good action film, and it knows exactly what it is. The film has a unique world, is filled with interesting characters, and has amazingly shot action sequences. I'd say make an effort to go see John Wick, because it's definitely worth seeing.

John Wick: 4.7/5
