I recently said there was a bunch of films I wanted to see in 2013, a couple of which I didn't get to see before the year wrapped up. Frozen was one of those films, so here we are.
Frozen is the latest CGI animated disney film (not by Pixar), and is based on the original story called The Ice Queen. The movie is about these two sisters (Anna and Elsa), one of which was born with the ability to freeze stuff. Only she can't really control them and eventually freaks out and flees to the mountains, forcing her younger sister to have to go find her.
Now if there's something I gotta say about this film, it's that really does get better the more I think about it. First of all, the film has really cool visuals. Especially the ice effects, whenever Elsa was using her ice powers it would look awesome. And the scenery looked cool too, there's this one scene where it's on this field of frozen water, with a bunch of damaged ships just scattered all over the place. It had a kind of eerie tone to it. Point is, this movie looked really good.
In terms of the story, I really liked the story of Frozen. For one thing, the characters in the film are fantastic. Anna and Elsa are both really likeable characters in their own ways, and the sibling dynamic in the film works really well. It's not just believable, but it's also emotional in a lot of moments. I really like that -unlike other Disney films where it'd focus on romance or something sappy- this movie focuses most of its attention on their bond. I liked that, it's a smart move Disney took.
I also really like the music in the film. The majority of Disney songs are usually those catchy type songs, like Abba, where it's more guilty pleasure music. That wasn't the case in Frozen, for the most part the songs are really emotional and uplifting. "Let it Go" has been nominated for Best Song by the Oscars, and I really hope it wins, because it's pretty epic.
I really think Disney dodged a bullet with the Olaf character (the snowman dude), because from the trailers I got the impression he'd be yet another loud and annoying disney comic relief character. But he wasn't, he was the opposite. Josh Gad does an impressive job making this character likeable with subtle voice acting.
Kristoff and his reindeer Sven are also great, they're this duo that had a great partnership dynamic. This is just my opinion, I'm not sure if other people noticed this, but I found it similar to Han Solo and Chewbacca in Star Wars. You've got these two rebel types, who despite one of them not speaking english, have a friendship. And not just a mans best friend type thing, but they seem like bros. I liked that, I thought it was a really neat way of showing that character.
I think the film's pacing was it's only real issue. The film slows down a bit in the middle and looses my attention. One or two of the scenes were just filler, so that they had an extra song in it or something. I know films are bound to slow down, but this movie has a few really forgettable scenes. But besides that small gripe, I really like this movie.
Final Rating
Disney's Frozen is yet another great film from Disney, filled with lots of fun characters, but also really emotional moments. I really enjoyed Frozen, I had a lot of fun with this film, this has some scenes that really hit you hard, and that is in no way a bad thing. It sucks that I didn't see this movie in 2013, because this would've certainly made it onto my Top 15.
Frozen: 4.7/5
