The Lego Movie is an animated film by Warner bros, and it's about Legos. And with a premise like that, it may seem like it's a 2 hour commercial, and to be fair it kind of is. That doesn't mean it's bad, it's just lego sales are probably going to go way up now that this movie's out.
Now one of the highlights in this film is definitely its humour. This movie has a very surprisingly clever sense of humour, and I get that a film about Legos may not seem clever, but the jokes are really smart in this film. They play on lego humour, jokes that people who have played with lego will get. (So basically everyone).
And on that topic, this film does really ride on that fact. Because as a kid, I remember lego being huge, hell as far as I know legos are still pretty popular. And with that, this movie kind of reminded me of why legos were and still are pretty cool. Everything in this film is legos, even the fire and other special effects. All made of lego.
The story of the film is pretty cool too, it's almost this Matrix-ish plot about this guy called "Emmit" who finds out he's essentially the chosen one. And I'm going to admit, going into this film I expected it would just be a "for kids" movie, kinda like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs thing. However, this film was surprisingly not a select audience kind of movie.
Now this movie isn't without its flaws, and there were a couple. The main issue was that the animation took me a while to adjust. It's CGI, it's clear it's CGI animation, but they use a stop-motion animation style with it. Which may sound simple, but at first it kinda hurt my eyes a little bit. But after ten minutes I got into it and was fine.
I gotta say, going into a film like this, I expected all jokes and little plot. However there was a point in the third act of the film which really hits you where you live. I swear, it's like they got the guy who wrote Toy Story to write the last part of their film, and that is in no way a bad thing.
Final Rating
This film was very much a surprise to me, as it's more than just a 2 hour lego ad. This film has all the characteristics of a good animated film, it's got a great sense of humour, and a really touching scene. The animation (although I needed to adjust to it) was very well done, and the film overall is really cool.
The Lego Movie: 4/5
