Okay, so I think It's only fitting to start this list off as controversially as possible. Napoleon Dynamite.
It's probably going to be a long day for your keyboard. |
Now, while I found this movie funny, and it worked as a comedy... that's what I saw it as. A comedy. I'm not sure what the hell I missed, because while everyone else told me how clever this film was and how genius it was, all I saw was a basic high school comedy. I found the Napoleon character funny enough, and the side characters were really quirky, but that's my other problem with the film. It was so damn quirky. It seemed like a weird Wes Anderson knock-off that was too afraid to go nuts, which is what makes Wes Anderson great. He goes completely nuts with the visuals and the outfits and the characters. This film looked like it was trying to do that, but the director didn't have the confidence to go crazy with the film.

Another moment of very likely controversy, my #9 pick is The Artist.
People seem to love this film so much, and I don't know what it is, but I just don't get it. Most of the people I've mentioned this too say they love it because it's a silent film. But, at the end of the day, it's just a gimmick. It doesn't change the quality of the acting and the story. Speaking of which, I think the actors did a good job, and the story is fine. But the fact still remains (and I don't mean to sound harsh), there's a reason we don't make silent films anymore. It's outdated.
#8
Yet again, I'm kinda copping out with #8, because I enjoy An Education, but I think it's kinda empty.
Lot's of people love this film, and while it has really great aspects to it, it also has some bland moments. Moments that, in my opinion, left room for improvement. And I know a lot of people loved her performance, so I know some of you may tear me apart for this, but I wasn't a fan of Carey Mulligan in this film. She wasn't bad in it, but she wasn't great. And it still confuses me that she was nominated for the oscar for this, but none of her other (better) performances.

It's a classic film, it even won best picture I think but... I just don't like the movie Rocky.
I know, everyone loves this film, and I guess I can see why other people would enjoy it, but I don't like it. I don't hate it either, but I just think it gets more credit than it deserves. Is it a good underdog story? Yeah, but holy crap, I really don't like Stallone in this film. I know he's supposed to be kinda dumb and that's what people like, but I'm just so put off by it. Really, I'm not a fan of this whole series. The first Rocky was too slow for me, then the rest of them are just way too ridiculous.
When I talk about the Avengers set up films, I think of Iron Man & Captain America. I try my hardest not to think about Thor.
Unlike a lot of the other films on this list, I'm less in the minority here. Fans of the comics seemed to love this film, and some casual movie-goers. But there are a few people like me who just couldn't stand it. And the reasons I couldn't stand it seemed to be the exact reasons people liked it. I didn't like all the needless cameos, I didn't like the story, I didn't like the fact that actual Thor stuff was barely in it. In fact, I wasn't a fan of Loki in this film. He was cool, but I think he didn't reach his full potential until Avengers, when Joss Whedon essentially turned him into the Spike of the Marvel universe.

Comedic films are often loved by lots of people, and one of the most popular ones is The Hangover.
I just couldn't get into this film, and it has a few laughs but they mostly come from Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms having great chemistry and being witty. In fact, if the film had focused more on those two and less on Zack Galifianakis, I would've enjoyed it more. But, the film doesn't go the clever route, it goes the obnoxious humour route, and I wasn't a fan.
#4
Yes another comedy people seem to just love is American Pie.
Don't get me wrong, the dad in this movie is great. |
#3
With the rest of these films I can see why some people like them, but I just can't tell why Robocop has such a committed fanbase.
They defend this film to the bone, saying it's deeper than just an action film. But the thing is, it's not. This film has essentially no substance, and is just an action film. And as an action film, it works. It's fun to watch. But action films don't usually have this kind of following. So why do so many people love it? because of how campy it is. Everyone loves it's cartoonish nature. And to be fair, it succeeds at being cheesy. But I also think that cheesy doesn't mean good, it means the opposite. Would I watch this film if it were on TV? Yeah, but I consider this a guilty pleasure film.

Much like Thor, Avatar is very split among people.
Some love it, some hate it. I'm one of the latter, I really don't like this film. It's just the same story we've seen before, both the story of a guy who fights with the native Americans against the military, and the overused Liar Revealed story (This is when the plot revolves around someone lying, and then they get discovered for it. Ex. Rango, Wedding Crashers). And, even if it wasn't so cliche, I still wouldn't like this movie, because it's just not that great. Everyone praised this film for it's CGI, and even that I think is just good. It's good to look at, but it doesn't look real. And what's more annoying is that this movie won the oscar for best special effects, and beat District freaking 9 in the process.
How did Avatars obviously cgi characters beat this amazingly detailed film? You tell me. |
#1: Moulin Rouge
Go ahead, get mad at me to your hearts content, but I hate this film |
