Mon Ami movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews...
Mon Ami is an independent dark comedy, directed by Rob Grant. It stars Mike Kovac, Scott Wallis, and Chelsey Reist. It's about two friends working a low paying job, who make an attempt at a get rich quick plan. However, when things start to go wrong with their plan, they have the try to fix the situation for them and everyone else involved.

The writing in this film is great, the characters really work well for the plot, and the dialogue is fantastic. The dark humor in this film is very well done, being that kind of situational humor that makes things like Breaking Bad great. And the two lead actors do a really good job of playing characters who are entertaining.

The film is also really well shot and cut, allowing for it to use its dark sense of humor to it's full potential. The shots are well editied, and the way it's filmed gives it a gritty visual style. What this all adds up to is a very real feeling experience. The really good dialogue I mentioned earlier and realistic characters only add to this effect, making a film that feels like it's a real event that I'm watching play out.

This is all not to say that it's an incredibly pleasant film, this is a very dark and Coen Brothers-esque film. By that I mean the tone and style of the world and characters is dark and bleak, almost reminding me of films like No Country for Old Men. Which creates a unique tone mixing situational humor with dark violent moments. Even reminding me of things such as Breaking Bad at times, which is in no way a bad thing.

Final Verdict
Mon Ami is a dark, and also in some ways kind of funny with the situational & dialogue based comedy. This is a great film for Coen Brothers fans or Breaking Bad fans. My only gripe with the film is that it's a bit too short, at only an hour and a half long, but other than that this is a unique and very well made movie. I'd say it's a good time, and I'd recommend it for most people.

Mon Ami: 4.7/5
