Gone Girl movie review

Article by Gabe Zia

Lazy Film Critic reviews....
Gone Girl is the latest film from David Fincher, who's also brought us films like Fight Club, Seven, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. It's based on the book of the same name by Gillian Flynne, and follows this guy named Nick Dunne whos wife, Amy, mysteriously vanishes. The film stars Ben Affleck as Nick Dunne, as well as Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Carrie Coon, and Scoot Mcnairy (for about one scene).

David Fincher films are often very well written, mainly because he usually has a good writer on board, or the source material is also well written. Now while I haven't read Gone Girl, I know it had to have been a pretty awesome book, because Gone Girl is very well written. I won't spoil anything, but the story is played out in an interesting and unpredictable manner, which keeps you guessing the whole way through, and keeps the interest really high. Now while there isn't a shock as big as Fight Club or Seven, the film has enough twists and turns to make you constantly speculating as to what will happen next.
Rosamund Pike in Gone Girl
The acting in the film is pretty good, for the most part. Ben Affleck showed a lot of acting chops here, and made me hopeful for him playing batman. Rosamund Pike was also really good in the movie, and played an interesting and unique character. Tyler Perry and Neil Patrick Harris had me skeptical right from the start, simply because they typically do comedy roles. Of the two, I think Tyler Perry was better in the film, despite his short appearance in the movie. Neil Patrick Harris however, while he wasn't exactly bad in the film, he wasn't anything particularly memorable.

If there's on thing David Fincher often delivers on, no matter what film it is, it's a constantly eerie tone. Even in Social Network, a film that's just about facebook, had an eerie tone. And Gone Girl certainly is not lacking in terms of its disturbing tone and nature with some shots that just kind of freak you out, as well as a soundtrack which creates a unique atmosphere for the film.
Carrie Coon in Gone Girl
If there's one thing I can say for the film, even without reading the book, I can tell it was accurate to the source material. How? Well, the movie is really long. And, unlike last years Wolf of Wall Street, this movie feels really long too. Especially the ending, this film takes a long time to wrap up. And I'd say that's my only issue with Gone Girl, there's a point where It stopped feeling like the film hadn't reached its ending yet, and started feeling like they were stretching the movie on in order to have a longer run time.

Final Rating
Gone Girl is a really good movie, it's got an eerie tone and an unsettling atmosphere which sucks you in and keeps you there, despite keeping you there longer than it should. The acting is good, the writing is excellent, and I think it's a pretty good movie. If you like David Fincher films, I'd say go check it out.

Gone Girl: 4/5
