Lazy Film Critic reviews....
The Guest is an action-thriller, from the people who made the horror cult hit, You're Next. The film stars kind of relevant Downton Abby actor Dan Stevens, who after seeing this film, I think needs to be way more relevant. The film follows this guy who claims to know a soldier who died, and befriends the dead soldiers family. However, not all is at it seems. Frankly, in films like these, is it ever? For those of you who enjoy stylish action movies like Drive, one of the things that would make a stylish neo-noire like that good is the cinematography and slick visuals, which is a common element of The Guest. The movie is beautifully filmed, with lots of rich colourful shots as well as a lot of really great production design. There are more than a few scenes in this movie in which the way the scene is shot, and the way it's set up make it incredibly memorable, mainly in the final act of the film.
What I think a lot of people would also like about The Guest is the fact that, despite its slick visuals and seemingly modern set design, at its core this movie feels like an 80s action movie, mainly due to the way the action is shown in the film, and the way it's edited. A lot of the action scenes have these jump cuts and quick zoom-ins on a characters face during a fight which make it feel like it's straight from the 80s, minus a lot of the cheese or bad parts that those movies have a lot of.
Besides the action elements, another thing I liked about this movie almost throughout was the fact that I didn't know where this movie was going. It's not a predictable movie by any means, and this keeps you engaged in the film. As you're going along, you want to know who this guy is, and what his story is. As the film goes along however, it answers some of the questions you may have, but only creates even more. It's not until pretty much the end of the film that everything has been revealed. This gives the movie a consistently unpredictable, and almost volatile nature to it.
Final Rating
The Guest is a slick modern neo-noire, mixed in with a classic 80s action movie. It's got great visuals and modern feel, with a lot of 80s action tropes. It's suspensful, it's engaging, and it's entertaining throughout. If you're a fan of modern action films, or a fan of 80s films, chances are you're going to enjoy this movie.
The Guest: 4.5/5
