Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
Bridge of Spies
Bridge of Spies is a historical drama based on a true story, it's directed by Steven Spielberg, and written by the Coen brothers, so right there you've got two major filmmakers working on this movie. The film is set during the cold war, the essential plot is that America has captured a Russian spy, but at the same time, Russia has captured an American spy. There's a lot more too it than that, but that's all you'll need to know going into this movie. It stars Tom Hanks, Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, and Austin Stowell.
Okay, so with this being a Tom Hanks movie, I have to bring up his performance in this movie. Tom Hanks is one of those actors where it doesn't matter what the role is, he'll bring his A-game. Bridge of Spies is no exception, he's very good in this movie playing this really relatable character. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's nominated for an oscar for this movie. Another really great performance here is from Mark Rylance, who plays the Soviet Spy. This guy was extremely compelling, and this movie absolutely wouldn't have been the same were it not for his performance here.
There's also the topic of Steven Spielberg, who is one of the most brilliant directors on the planet. The fact that I can go out to a movie theatre in 2015 and watch a movie directed by the guy who made Jaws is incredible. And honestly, I think Bridge of Spies is the best movie Spielberg has made since Minority Report in 2002, this is one of his most well-directed and fine tuned films I've seen from him, and I'm glad he's still bringing his style of filmmaking to movies.
All that being said, there's a small portion of this movie that I have to address, and it's not even a problem with the movie per say, but it's something that should be said. This isn't a fast paced movie, there aren't any really intense moments, this is a talking movie. Now while I didn't mind that, in fact I found the dialogue and writing to be incredibly engaging, I can see why some people will call this movie boring. While I'd still recommend just about anyone go see this, I can't guarantee everyone will love it like I did.
Final Rating
Bridge of Spies is a fantastic movie, one of the best movies of the year in fact. It's one of the best movies in a long time for a lot of the people involved, Tom Hanks and Mark Rylance both nail the performances, and the script for this movie is fantastic. While it's not the most exciting movie, I'd highly recommend going to see this movie.
