Spotlight Movie Review

Lazy Film Critic Movie Reviews
Spotlight
Spotlight is a drama based on a true story about how a team of journalists for the Boston globe uncovered the fact that an incredibly disturbing amount of Catholic priests were child predators, and that possibly it was being allowed to happen. The film is directed by Tom McCarthy, and is written by both McCarthy and Josh Singer. It stars Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Stanley Tucci, Liev Schreiber, and John Slattery.
The actors in this movie are all at the top of their game. Michael Keaton is really great in this movie, It's cool he's making a comeback in the way he is, because he's a really talented actor, and shows a lot of that talent in this movie. Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams are also fantastic in this movie, they both bring a lot of really convincing emotion to their roles, and they both have their share of memorable scenes. The standout for me was Stanley Tucci, and while he didn't have much screentime in the movie as a whole, he pretty much stole every scene he was in.
This movie is also very well directed, not just in terms of cinematography, but the staging and timing of the actors feels very well directed. The way each scene plays out feels really natural, and the directors effort in making this movie feel real absolutely pays off. This movie has an incredible flow to it, the transition between scene to scene feels very natural and very fluid. As for the cinematography, it's also really good, especially as far as lighting goes. It's not something I normally notice, but when it's done well, it's worth talking about.
The writing is where this movie truly shines, and sets itself apart from other similar movies. Most movies like this, the more dialogue based films, are films I enjoy but can understand why some would find it boring. However, this is a rare exception where the dialogue is written in a way that's both very realistic, but it's also engaging. At no point throughout the entire movie was I ever bored with a scene, or disinterested with what the characters were talking about. A lot of the time, for dialogue oriented films (such as Bridge of Spies) I'd usually have to point out that some would find the talking to be boring. However, this is a rare exception in which I think even casual moviegoers will have a really good time watching this movie.

Final Rating
What more can I say about this movie? Spotlight is one of the most impressive, and by a huge margin one of the best of 2015. The acting is fantastic, the direction of the film is great, and the writing is some of the best I've seen all year. This film draws your attention, and keeps it that way for the entire running time. I never checked the time, I never got bored with a scene, and I never thought any given scene was too long. If you're looking for a good movie to watch, then do yourself a favour, skip Mockingjay Part 2 and go see this instead. It's well worth the price of admission.
