November 2016 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So with October almost over, I'm once again taking some time out to talk about the upcoming films this month. Of course, as per usual this isn't strictly every film coming out, just the ones I'm interested and know about. Keep in mind I probably won't end up seeing all of these and I'll also probably end up seeing something that aren't on here, as underground/indie film release dates are usually up in the air where I live so I don't know when they're gonna come out.

Doctor Strange
So far the MCU hasn't disappointed me on a big scale since Iron Man 2, and I'm really hoping Doctor Strange isn't the point where it starts. I feel like at this point people are going to start getting tired of Marvel movies being much of the same thing, so I hope this is where they start to change things up and take some risks with the plot and characters.

Hacksaw Ridge
This is a film I've been very intrigued about ever since a fairly recent showing at the Venice film festival, where apparently it received a 10 minute standing ovation. The films merits and the fact that it genuinely looks really great aside, a 10 minute standing ovation is one hell of an accolade.

Loving
In the years since Take Shelter, Jeff Nichols has proved himself as one of the most versatile directors in Hollywood. With Take Shelter, he handled a complicated subject blending science fiction with real world psychology, with Mud, he told what could have been a basic thriller in a way that made it a very personal story, and with Midnight Special he delivered a social commentary about society in the form of a sci-fi story. Now, he's giving us a very unfortunately relevant story about a married interracial couple fighting the laws that try to keep them apart.

Arrival - November 2016 Highlight
I said it when I reviewed Enemy, I said it in my review for Sicario, and I'll say it now - I will watch anything with Denis Villeneuve attached to it. At this point, he's more than proven himself as one of the best directors working today. This film follows a creative and fairly original plot, a linguist is assigned by the government to interpret an alien language. From the trailer, I know very little beyond that - and that's fine. Denis Villeneuve has yet to deliver a film that wasn't anything short of brilliant (Polytechnique, Incendies, Prisoners, Enemy, and Sicario have all been amazing), and I seriously doubt a bigger budget is going to change that.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
I really love the Harry Potter movies, they're to me what I imagine Star Wars was to a lot of people growing up. So, when I heard there was a new entry to the series, in the form of a kind of prequel based on another one of Rowlings books, needless to say I got excited. The news that it's been split into 5 films is... Concerning to say the least, but not enough to stop me from giving this film a chance.

Moana
I'm an animation buff, chances are if it's animated - especially if its animated by an animation studio I like, like Disney - then I'll get excited for it simply by default. But take that excitement and add on a unique story, good music, and a Disney musical not centred around Euro-centric culture, all awesome!
