December 2016 Watchlist

Article by Gabe Zia
So as November draws to a full stop, the end of 2016 looms closer and closer, which means we're officially neck deep in the big Oscar season. So, with that in mind, I'm taking a look at some of the films coming out this month I'm planning to see. Keep in mind this isn't a definitive list, I may see some films that aren't listed here, and I probably won't end up seeing all the movies on this list. So, with that in mind, here's the final watchlist of 2016!

December 2nd

Jackie
As far as biopics go this year, few have had me more intrigued and curious than Jackie. The film follows Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy in the immediate aftermath of the assassination of JFK. What has me most interested in this is the multiple angles and complexities a story like this could take, so I eagerly await this one.

Nocturnal Animals - December 2016 Highlight
This movie was made by a fashion designer, and just from the trailer it really shows in it's unique visual style and costume design. This movie has made waves recently in the indie community, and according to reviews thus far it's absolutely outstanding. So good word of mouth and a fantastic visual style is enough to draw me in, I'm intrigued with this film, especially by what a good job the marketing has done of drawing out the suspense.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
So The Force Awakens was not only one of my favorite films of last year, but it's currently my favorite film of the Star Wars franchise, so with that I was really excited for the direction these movies seemed to be going in. Aside from that, Rogue One seems to be the first film in the franchise to follow what would normally be deemed "expanded universe", so the books, comics, and video games, which opens the door for many of the best stories in the Star Wars universe to be brought to life on the big screen.

La La Land
Musicals aren't exactly uncommon (certainly not as uncommon as most positive reviews of this movie would have you think), but they're usually pretty enjoyable nonetheless. From what the trailers have shown, this movie has a wonderful visual style and outstanding musical numbers, and for me that's usually what I look for in a good musical. It doesn't come up very often, but musicals are a kind of guilty pleasure of mine, so I absolutely can't wait to watch this movie, and then immediately buy the soundtrack afterwards.

December 23rd

Assassins Creed
You kind of have to feel bad for Assassins Creed, because this movie has a lot riding on it. Like, if this one tanks, then that's kind of it for video game movies. We'll never see the Shadow of the Colossus movie or the Mass Effect movie we all kind of want to see if this one fails as well. So of the films this month, this is the one I'm hoping is the best one, because we really need that at this point, we need an awesome video game movie so that Hollywood will actually put some talent into the prospect of video game movies.
