Lazy Film Critic reviews....
It's January, which for most critics would mean week after week of terrible and forgettable garbage. However, for an unpaid critic like me, it basically means four weeks of absolutely nothing. So, in order to not have four weeks of nothing, I've decided to take a look at one of my favorite movies of all time, Seven Psychopaths, starring Colin Farrel, Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken, and Woody Harrelson.
The writing in this movie is sheer brilliance, but it's also not seemingly normal movie dialogue. Some movies have really good realistic dialogue, while others have really clever movie dialogue. This movie blends the two into what is shockingly realistic, and well rounded dialogue. It's clever too, I know a lot of people like to go on about Pulp Fiction or Wolf of Wall Street, but I still retain that Seven Psychopaths is one of the most quotable movies in the world, easily the most quotable movie in the past few years.
The performances in this movie are also really good. The actors all have pretty good chemistry between one another, and the already well written dialogue is only helped by the comedic timing of these actors. Colin Farrell & Christopher Walken are both good and funny, and have memorable moments. However, they're greatly overshadowed by the scene stealing powerhouse that is Sam Rockwell. If you've read my blog before, or you know me, it's no secret I'm a huge fan of Sam Rockwells, the guy is practically my favorite actor. This movie is no exception. He's hilarious, he's relatable, but also plays this character really well. It's almost scary at a point.
Something I love in movies (and just things in general) is self awareness (unless it's a robot, then self awareness is bad). Cabin in the Woods, Zombieland, or Galaxy Quest. These are parodies, mainly in the sense that they are incredibly self aware. And while Seven Psychopaths isn't a parody of any set genre or movie, it's just a parody of movies in general. Not like the Scary Movie franchise which parody multiple movies, more like the film just goes through every cliche and storytelling device well known amongst movie fans, and addresses them. The characters pretty much all but turn to the camera and say "yeah, you know that movie trope we just mentioned? It's in this movie. And we're talking about it". That is brilliant.
Final Rating
Seven Psychopaths is a unique, original, memorable, self aware, well written, and amazingly acted masterpeice of a dark comedy. I'm glad January exists because it gives me the chance to talk about movies like these. It's without a doubt one of my favorite movies of all-time, for a huge number of reasons. It's one of those movies I think most people will generally enjoy, so it's totally worth checking out.
